How it works

Exposures Lite follows a simple and consistent working structure designed to support deliberate photographic practice.

Topics or challenges are created and released to the group in advance. Each cycle spans approximately six weeks, and all topics are shared at once. This gives participants flexibility in deciding what to shoot and when, rather than prescribing a fixed weekly assignment.

Images are submitted up to one day prior to each session. This allows time for review and helps keep group discussions focused and productive.

The group meets on Zoom to review submitted photographs together. Conversations explore creative approaches and possible refinements, including composition, exposure choices, use of light, and technical considerations such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, histograms, and in-camera decisions. Where appropriate, the group also discusses framing and in-camera cropping as a way to improve clarity and intent.

Feedback is offered in a constructive and non-confrontational manner. Discussions often include open questions such as, “I struggled with this. How would others approach it?” The goal is shared learning rather than evaluation.

Each topic typically includes two images per participant. Depending on group size and available time, a third image may also be reviewed.

Cameras and Equipment

The brand of camera is unimportant. The group is oriented toward cameras that provide manual or semi-manual control, often with interchangeable lenses.

Cell phone cameras are not part of this group.

Images are submitted up to one day prior to each session. This allows time for review and helps keep group discussions focused and productive.

The emphasis is on understanding and using the capabilities of the camera itself, rather than relying on post-processing to resolve decisions after the fact.

Who the Group is For

Exposures Lite tends to work well for photographers who:

  • Want to get more value from a DSLR or mirrorless camera by using more of its features
  • Are comfortable working in Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual modes
  • Understand basic photographic concepts such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and common composition techniques
  • Are interested in reducing reliance on editing by making clearer decisions in camera
  • Are willing to participate in group discussion by offering thoughtful, positive critique
  • Are open to receiving feedback in the same spirit
  • Respect both the group and the underlying principles of Straight Out Of Camera practice

The group includes a range of experience levels and welcomes new participants who are aligned with this approach.

Exposures Lite is built on curiosity, mutual respect, and the belief that limits can sharpen attention.

Session Timing

Sessions are planned four times a year, typically beginning in late January, April, July, and October. Each session spans several weeks and follows the same structure, allowing participants to plan their shooting time in advance.
